Solid-state Materials

The Functional Materials Group within the Institute for Materials Research in SPEME focuses on the exploitation of perovskite and related structure oxides for industrial applications.

As such the controlled crystallization of the oxides in ceramics, thin films and single crystals is at the core of our processes, with applied research being based on optimization of functional properties through the control of crystal morphology, orientation, and size.

Current “crystallization-rich” activities include:

  • The processing of crystallographically-textured ceramics with enhanced piezoelectric and magnetoelectric properties, using molten salt crystallization

  • Control of multiferroic oxide film orientation and morphology using pulsed laser deposition

  • Growth of “large” (cm-scale) single crystals of morphotropic phase boundary ferroelectrics;
